Contrary to what one might think, makeup wasn't creative enough for Tatyana, so she left it for skincare.

Hi Tatyana! Where are you from?

I'm from Kazakhstan.

How did you get into skincare?

Well, first I got into makeup and then over time, I realized that it wasn’t something I really wanted to do, so I looked into other skincare options. I found that makeup wasn’t as creative as I thought it would be. I felt surprisingly constricted. You have a little bit of more room to wiggle within skincare and can be more creative and adventurous, so I’m happy here.

What is your favorite part of working with skin?

I love that you can pretty much shape it into what you want it to be. It is a journey and everything can change. It’s definitely going to take some effort and work, but the end result is what it’s all about. And with skincare, the end result is always changing.

How would you describe the style of your work?

New York is a very stressful city, everyone is on the edge, so when I see my clients I always try to give them a little bit of zen time. I always think, “leave it all up to me and trust me.” Just being away from your phone or your desk, it's definitely de-stressing and relaxing. I also love to build trust with clients. That is something that is so important to me and I pride myself in it, so I will adapt my work as needed for each client.

Do you have any general advice based on what you've seen with clients?

I feel like a lot of clients over-process their skin. Just like with our body, we have to detox our skin once in a while. Sometimes it’s important to give your skin a break from things like acids or products that strip. You have to give your skin time to breathe and recharge. It will thank you.

What is a product that you think more people should use?

What I see a lot is that clients have stressed and sensitized skin from living in the city, so it’s so important to use products that really quiet someone’s energy. I pick ingredients like calendula to combat the stress and all that coffee we’re all drinking. It’s all about soothing your skin.

Favorite product and why?

I love Naturopathica. The White Tea Mask has borage seed oil that locks in moisture. It’s super hydrating. When your skin is feeling too dry and needs a pick me up, it can be used as a night cream. I also love the Vitamin C15 Serum because it’s very powerful. Vitamin C is a great antioxidant for the skin, it does a few different things: it’s anti-aging, it fights off free radicals, it has antioxidants that help fight against hyperpigmentation and sun damage, and it even stimulates collagen. It definitely brightens up your skin and gives you a dewy look.

What are three things that you like that don't have to do with skin?

  • I like traveling and my dream vacation location is Alaska.

  • I love food and cooking, I make a great seafood paella.

  • Living a healthy lifestyle is very important to me, so wellness-focused activities like camping and yoga are my favorites.

Tatyana U. sees clients at our NoMad location.
