We’re pretty picky about the enhancements that we make available at Heyday. We want to make sure that we give our clients treatments that we believe they’ll see real and lasting results from. Which is why we’re such big fans of microdermabrasion. This treatment offers both short and long-term results without making you miss a day at the office.
What is it?
Microdermabrasion is a noninvasive procedure that exfoliates your skin, removing a layer of dead skin cells. With this layer gone, your body replaces these cells with new, healthier ones, leaving your skin softer and brighter. It’s the natural cycle of your cells, only sped up.
How does it work?
Microdermabrasion machines buff and polish the skin using a stream of fine crystals or a diamond tip. Crystals allow us to control the flow and power with a dial; diamond doesn’t as much. That is why we’ve opted for the crystal-tipped machine. Our machines also feature a suction function, allowing it to work like a tiny sandblaster and a tiny vacuum at the same time. The crystals blast off the dead skin and are vacuumed up by the machine.
That sounds a little scary, what does it feel like?
Some parts of facials, like a good facial massage, are relaxing. Some parts, like extractions, aren’t but are there for good reason. Microdermabrasion falls into the latter category. Is it the most comfortable part of your facial? No. But as the treatment moves along, clients get used to the feeling quickly. Some have said that it feels like a cat’s tongue licking you, or slightly itchy. However, it is not a burning sensation. If anything feels uncomfortable, always speak up—we monitor live skin changes, but we don’t know what you're feeling unless you tell us.
Okay, I’m in. Can I get it? Who is it good for? Who is it not good for?
Our Skin Therapists often recommend microdermabrasion for clients concerned with hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, sun damage, or (acne) scarring they hope to fade. It’s a great anti-aging procedure because it stimulates blood flow, which increases cell production and improves elasticity and texture—reducing lines, wrinkles, and helping thicken collagen. Like all types of exfoliation, it can help unclog pores. But not all benefits take long to see. Our Skin Therapist Wanda notes that “it also helps dry skin increase sebum production for a healthier glow.” Not bad for an enhancement that doesn’t add time to your facial!
Because of the nature of the enhancement, our Skin Therapists usually don’t recommend it for skin conditions such as rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, or acne, as it can irritate the skin.
Is there anything I should be aware of after microdermabrasion?
- Rosy skin afterward is perfectly normal. Your treatment stimulated your skin, and any flushness or light heat should calm by the next day.
- Pore detoxing. Your treatment helped purge debris trapped beneath dead skin buildup. With proper post-care, any small breakouts shouldn’t linger.
- Slightly drier skin. Minor flaking can occur. Moisturizer is your most important tool—consistent, generous use helps skin recover quickly and prevents unnecessary breakouts.
- Smoother, softer, glowing skin. Your treatment revealed fresh skin cells, and you’ll see and feel the difference.
What should I do post-appointment?
- Generous sunscreen is an absolute must. Your youthful new skin cells need protection.
- Treat your skin gently. Use a gentle cleanser, avoid scrubbing, and gently pat dry after washing or showering.
- Moisturize like a maniac. Twice daily or more—even in oil-prone areas. If it’s suited to your skin type, it will improve clarity.
- Drink water! Hydrate those fresh skin cells from the inside.
- For extra credit, use a gentle hydrating mask or balm at night.
What should I not do post-appointment?
- Avoid lengthy, direct sun exposure for 3 days (major pool or beach time).
- Don’t exfoliate for 3–5 days. No scrubs or at-home peels, no matter how gentle. Don’t wax or receive laser treatments for 5 days. For gents, don’t shave for 24 hours.
- Avoid heavy sweating workouts on the same day (bikram yoga, major cardio, etc.). Sweat may cause stinging and discomfort—pat, don’t wipe, your face. Avoid saunas and steam rooms as well.
- Avoid products with retinol, Vitamin C, AHA/BHA acids, benzoyl peroxide.
