Summer Skincare Myths, Debunked

Summer is the time for sunshine and embracing the love-hate relationship with the sweaty glow—but not all summertime skin tips are fact. Let's set the record straight on some common warm-weather beliefs to keep you progressing on your skin journey all summer long.
Myth #1: There's No Need for SPF When It's Cloudy.
Even with no sun, you should protect your skin from UVA rays. Whether you're inside or out on overcast days, these rays can still penetrate your skin. UVA rays are the "aging" rays that contribute to premature signs of aging and are a primary cause of skin cancer. Think of your daily broad-spectrum SPF as your year-round shield, regardless of the forecast.
Myth #2: The Sun Will Clear Up My Acne.
While sun exposure can initially slow down oil production and "dry out" existing breakouts, it can also exasperate your skin barrier. The sun can actually worsen the post-inflammatory pigmentation left over from blemishes, trigger more oil production, and cause future breakouts.
Protect acne-prone skin with our lightweight favorites, such as the Image Skincare Daily Prevention Sheer Matte Moisturizer SPF 30, a matte-drying moisturizer that provides broad-spectrum sun protection. We love the MDSolarSciences Mineral Creme SPF 50 as a broad-spectrum SPF - it's fragrance-free and dries as a smooth matte finish without leaving a white cast.
Myth #3: My SPF is Water-Resistant, So I Don't Need to Reapply.
Water-resistant doesn't mean you're protected from the sun all day. If you wipe off water or sweat, you are likely to remove a significant portion of the SPF layer. For maximum protection, you should always reapply after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.
Myth #4: I Don't Need a Moisturizer in the Summer if I have Oily or Acne-Prone Skin.
Keeping your skin hydrated, regardless of the season, is essential to maintaining a balanced skin barrier. When your skin is not properly hydrated, it can go into overdrive and over-produce oil to compensate, which may lead to clogged pores and more breakouts.
For the summer months, try opting for a lightweight, gel-based, or oil-free moisturizer to keep your skin balanced without feeling greasy. The Dr. Loretta Barrier Gel Repair Cream is gel-based and clinically proven to lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while smoothing texture and delivering weightless hydration. The Alchimie Forever Kantic Light Clarifying Cream is another great hot-weather option, as it absorbs instantly, minimizes shine, and is formulated to help reduce breakouts.
A consistent facial routine is your secret weapon against the season's changes. At Heyday, our expert Estheticians will customize each treatment to address your needs, as well as provide an at-home routine to deliver results in-between facials.
